Puerto Vallarta Ranks Among Mexico’s Most Competitive Cities in 2026
Puerto Vallarta continues to strengthen its position as one of Mexico’s most attractive destinations to live, invest, and do business. According to the 2026 Urban Competitiveness Index (ICU) published by the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO), the city ranked among the country’s top-performing metropolitan areas thanks to its strong economy, thriving tourism industry, and favorable business environment.
The report evaluates cities based on their ability to attract talent, generate investment, and create long-term economic opportunities. Puerto Vallarta’s performance reflects the steady growth the destination has experienced in recent years.
Its driving force is the highest hotel occupancy rate in its category (73.38%) and GDP growth of 2.73%, sustained by its own revenues of 46.84% (the highest in the group). In terms of safety, it stands out with only 8.98 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants and the highest perception of safety in its category (59.13%). The city is experiencing vertical growth, but towards the periphery. Although 74.93% of new housing is vertical, only 0.58% is located within the city limits. In terms of Society and Environment, it has the highest water treatment capacity in its group (4.33 liters per second per 1,000 inhabitants).
Tourism, Economic Growth, and Investment Confidence
One of the city’s strongest indicators was its 73.38% hotel occupancy rate, one of the highest within its category. Puerto Vallarta also stood out for its strong financial performance, demonstrating an exceptional ability to generate local revenue that supports infrastructure improvements, public services, and community development projects.
These factors continue to increase confidence among both national and international investors, reinforcing Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as a stable and growing real estate market.

A City That Continues to Gain Value
The report also highlights public safety, quality of life, and urban development as important factors contributing to the city’s competitiveness. These strengths not only improve everyday life for residents but also attract new businesses, investors, and residential developments.
For the real estate sector, these results reinforce what many professionals already recognize: competitive cities offer greater certainty, stronger infrastructure, and better long-term investment opportunities.
Looking Ahead
The 2026 IMCO ranking confirms Puerto Vallarta’s position as one of Mexico’s leading real estate and tourism markets. Its combination of economic growth, infrastructure, tourism, and quality of life continues to attract buyers, investors, and entrepreneurs from around the world.
As the destination continues to evolve, Puerto Vallarta remains an excellent choice for those seeking long-term value and investment opportunities on Mexico’s Pacific coast.
