Puerto Vallarta Launches Electric Transit System: What It Means for Urban Growth and Real Estate
Puerto Vallarta has taken an important step toward more modern and sustainable mobility with the launch of its first electric public transportation system. The project operates along one of the destination’s busiest corridors and is designed to provide more efficient, accessible, and environmentally responsible transportation for residents, workers, students, and visitors.
The new network includes 19 fully electric buses, along with ten complementary units operated by local concessionaires. According to SITEUR, the system is expected to serve more than 9,000 passengers each day, primarily along the Francisco Medina Ascencio corridor.
New Routes Connecting Key Areas
The system includes two primary routes:
- Trunk Route 2: Ixtapa to Downtown Puerto Vallarta
- Trunk Route 3: Las Juntas to Galerías Vallarta
The network connects important areas such as Downtown Puerto Vallarta, Marina Vallarta, the Hotel Zone, Galerías Vallarta, Las Juntas, Ixtapa, and the University Center of the Coast. A feeder route also provides transportation for CUCosta students.
Estimated service intervals range from five to fifteen minutes, with operations running approximately from 5:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. The general fare is 11 pesos, and passengers can use the Mi Movilidad payment system.
More Accessible and Sustainable Transportation
The electric buses feature low floors, designated spaces for wheelchair users, air conditioning, video surveillance, and LED lighting. In addition to reducing emissions and noise, these features provide a more comfortable and inclusive transportation experience.
The infrastructure required to operate the system represented an investment of approximately 360 million pesos. The project included a charging and operations facility covering more than 5,000 square meters, ten charging stations, administrative offices, lighting, signage, and improvements to several bus stops.
